No black cats, no excuses

A little bit of bad luck can go a long way toward knocking teams right out of October — if they let it. And while it shouldn’t happen, history has the ability to make sure it does from time to time.

Just ask the Dodgers, who haven’t brought a title back to Chavez Ravine since 1988 but hope new outfielder Manny Ramirez can reverse results like this:

Just ask the Brewers, who couldn’t quite make it all the way when they won the pennant in 1982.

Just ask the Mets, who haven’t won a World Series since 1986, in part because of bad-luck moments like this:

And this:

And this:

Ask the Phillies, who haven’t won it all since the Tug McGraw days:

And don’t forget to ask the Cubs, still talking about billy goats 100 years later.

Bottom line is this: October is all about putting aside the excuses, ignoring the black cats and superstitions, and coming together at the right time. One of these teams might have the magic to finally pull it off this year.

And the beauty of it is that we’ll all be watching.

“…the Dodgers, who haven’t brought a title back to Chavez Ravine since 1981…”
What about 1988? I remember that was a pretty good year for the Dodgers. Hard to be better than the best, which they were that year. Who could forget Gibby’s clutch homer of Eck’s hanging slider?

I still can’t believe the Mets didn’t make the World Series on ’06. That was their year. I actually cried when I woke up in the morning and saw what happened in that last inning.

And last year. I can’t believe the Mets didn’t make the playoffs.

This time no regrets. The Phillies and Marlins will crumble like a cookie. The Mets will finally make it. I say the Mets and the Cubs make the NLCS and it will go to 7 games.

i just hope steve bartman is ok…..i hope he’s living a normal life now, i mean give the guy a break, its been 5 years, and moises alou shouldnt have acted like a little spoiled brat then maybe alex gonzalez and the rest of the AACTUAL PLAYERS ON THE TEAM would not have crumbled like they did back in that faitful 8th inning…man though those were the days, back when homeruns were flying everywhere and sammy sosa was good

I agree, fenway. Bartman may very well be the most screwed over guy in the history of baseball that’s never actually worked for a team. I fully blame that loss on Gonzo choking, and not on Bartman.
    Don’t miss Sammy, though.
