What have we learned so far?

The countdown to the 2008 postseason began right after the All-Star Game, and we’ve definitely learned a few more things.

In case you didn’t believe it, the Angels are really for real. A home sweep of the Red Sox set that in stone, even though Boston still needs Big Papi to get rolling again. But right now, Vlad Guerrero and the boys have the best record in the Majors. This is Vlad’s shot that got things started:

//size of the video itself — NOT the player. Embed size will
//be generated dynamically.
//height of 300 for 4:3, 225 for 16:9
var flv_width=400;
var flv_height=225;

//if you don’t want the video to automatically play back,
//specify an initial image to display in the player.
//If you DO want it to play back automatically, comment
//out the init_image variable.
//Image should be the same width/height as the flv
var init_image=”http://mlblogsoctobergonzo.files.wordpress.com/2008/07/gonzo-guerrero.jpg”

//var endofplaylist_js_call=”javascript:my_javascript_function();”;
//var loop_playlist=”yes”;

var playlist = new Array();
playlist.push({flv:”http://mediadownloads.mlb.com/mlbam/2008/07/21/mlbtv_bosana_886683_800K.flv”,controls:”yes”});

The Tampa Bay Rays got their groove back with a few wins and took back the division lead over the Sox, while the Yankees took care of the A’s in the Bronx. That means things are starting to get a little crazy in the American League East. Check out Evan Longoria’s grand slam against the Blue Jays:

//size of the video itself — NOT the player. Embed size will
//be generated dynamically.
//height of 300 for 4:3, 225 for 16:9
var flv_width=400;
var flv_height=225;

//if you don’t want the video to automatically play back,
//specify an initial image to display in the player.
//If you DO want it to play back automatically, comment
//out the init_image variable.
//Image should be the same width/height as the flv
var init_image=”http://mlblogsoctobergonzo.files.wordpress.com/2008/07/gonzo-longoriahr.jpg”

//var endofplaylist_js_call=”javascript:my_javascript_function();”;
//var loop_playlist=”yes”;

var playlist = new Array();
playlist.push({flv:”http://mediadownloads.mlb.com/mlbam/2008/07/21/mlbtv_tortba_875280_800K.flv”,controls:”yes”});

How about the Dodgers? A major comeback over the D-backs and all of a sudden we’ve got a tie in the National League West. Here’s the big ninth inning:

//size of the video itself — NOT the player. Embed size will
//be generated dynamically.
//height of 300 for 4:3, 225 for 16:9
var flv_width=400;
var flv_height=225;

//if you don’t want the video to automatically play back,
//specify an initial image to display in the player.
//If you DO want it to play back automatically, comment
//out the init_image variable.
//Image should be the same width/height as the flv
var init_image=”http://mlblogsoctobergonzo.files.wordpress.com/2008/07/gonzo-dodgers.jpg”

//var endofplaylist_js_call=”javascript:my_javascript_function();”;
//var loop_playlist=”yes”;

var playlist = new Array();
playlist.push({flv:”http://mediadownloads.mlb.com/mlbam/2008/07/21/mlbtv_lanari_887475_800K.flv”,controls:”yes”});

There are almost too many storylines developing to blog about in one post. The Cardinals continue to surprise everybody, including me. Cliff Lee of the Indians already has 13 wins. The Mets are still on fire.

The suspense is building. Can you feel it?

There is no suspense really ……… the Dodgers will fall apart. The Cubs have won the central already but don’t be surprised if they still are involved in one trade in the next week or so. The Dodgers might move a couple of guys as well. The Diamondbacks will win the West. The Mets will surprise everyone in the East and the Wild Card will be the Cardinals.

In the AL its all pretty much done except the Wild Card / East race. The Rays, Yes the RAYS, are my prediction to Win the East. With the RED SOX as the Wild Card. The White Sox will win the Central and the Angels have already won the West!

ALCS = Angels / Rays
NLCS = Mets / Cubs or Diamondbacks / Cubs
World Series = Cubs / Rays
World Series Winner = I say RAYS sorry cubs fans the drought continues!

Check out my MLBlog ….. I have caught over 4800 baseballs at professional baseball games since 1977 including 2808 and MLB games and 99 of those are game home runs including Sammy Sosa’s 61st in 1998. Bob Boone’s 100th Career HR and Dave Winfield’s 450th!

I hope the Cubs can hang in there. Cubs vs. Yankees or Cubs vs. Red Sox would be a great series.

My picks for this season:
AL Playoff Teams: Rays (WC), Red Sox, White Sox, Angels
NL Playoff Teams: Mets, Brewers, D-Backs, Cubs (WC)

ALCS: White Sox vs. Red Sox
NLCS: Brewers vs. D-Backs

WS: Brewers vs. Red Sox

WS Champion: Red Sox

Check out my blog. I discuss all things baseball, a bunch of random things, ranging to every team, including the minors.

Cardinals are surprising folks, but their lack of late-inning pitching and the front office’s apathy for finding a remedy may deter them from being as good as they could be. It’s frustrating to say the least.

I’d love to see the World Series move back and forth between Fenway and Wrigley. That’s baseball magic.

I have been a life-long Rays fan and it is great to finally see them doing well. I hope they can hold on but they might have to get some bullpen and outfield help. It is also great to have Evan come into the majors with a bang. He has really carried our team along with Dioner Navarro.

How in the world can anyone say the AL Central is a done deal? Is it simply because the Twins have a 14 game road trip? (which, by the way, they have won the first two against the mighty Angels) Heck, for the past two weeks, it seems like the Sox and Twins flip-flop for first place more often than any presidential candidate! I believe that both of these teams will be playing in October, and yes, both the Red Sox and Yankees will be home. I know, I know, empty suits at ESPN and FOX don’t believe it, but trust me…MLB will actually survive if both of them are out of the playoffs.
